HISTORY

The origin of Pati Regency’s story is based on Babad ‘Java text’ Pati: Yuyu Rumpung Krodha.

‘Adipati’ or Duke Yudhopati or the Duke of The “Kadipaten” or The Duchy of Paranggaruda had an intention to marry his only son named Raden Jaseri or better known as Menak Jasari with the princess of “Adipati” or Duke of Carangsoko named Dewi Ruyung Wulan.

Unfortunately, Menak Jasari is a physically disabled and has an ugly face that made Dewi Ruyung Wulan refused to be approached by Menak Jasari. However, due to the forcing of her parents, inevitably, Dewi Ruyung Wulan had to accept Raden Jaseri as her husband.

Afterwards, while the wedding party were being held, Dewi Ruyung Wulan who was still sad, would like to to ask personally for a wayang performance enlivened by wayang purwo (wayang kulit ‘traditional puppet theatre art’) by a particular Dalang or ‘puppeteer,’ Ki Soponyono, who is very famous as a puppeteer who can play some characters in the story Mahabarata and Ramayana in a way that many audiences were felt hypnotized into believing the story-telling as if the story was alive.

Dalang Sapanyono were confused at the Dewi Ruyung Wulan’s request at first. After all, it was only a tactic from Dewi Ruyung Wulan to prolong the ritual of the marriage ceremony, and she hoped that the marriage could be thwarted because she did not love her designated husband, R. Jaseri. A wedding which was not based on love would be painful and weaken the spirit to live as a wife for his future husband. Therefore, she asked Dalang Saponyono to play a puppet story similar with her sad story, to let everyone know about her sadness.

Dalang Saponyono then performed the wayang performance as best as he could since he also felt challenged to play a story of that was not common. Normally, wayang performed in a wedding is always a happy ending story, but this time, upon the princess’ request, Dalang Sapanyono must deliver a story that ended sadly. He knew that it would him get some protest from the audience. However, since princess Dewi Ruyung Wulan insist to sit next to the puppeteer until her request is carried on, Dalang Sapanyono had no choice but play the story since Dewi Ruyung Wulan would not sat on the throne of the bride if her request was not obeyed.

Soponyono then finally put on the wayang show that were requested by Dewi Ruyung Wulan. In that wayang performance, he was accompanied by his two beautiful younger siblings named Ambarsari and Ambarwati who act as Waranggano Swarawati. During Sopoyono’s performance, Raden Jaseri was very happy for he is getting married and sitting together with Dewi Ruyung Wulan on the bridal chair, R. Jaseri's saliva couldnot his saliva whenever he saw her beauty. His hands began to naughtily poking and pinching Dewi Ruyung Wulan’s smooth cheek, so much that made her feel uncomfortable. In the middle of the wayang performance, there was a commotion caused by Dewi Rayung Wulan who ran away from the bridal chair and threw herself on Dalang Saponyono. Dewi Ruyung Wulan was both drifted in the story of wayang and was fascinated and fell in love with Dalang Soponyono, whose face is much more handsome and a brilliant young puppeteer compared Raden Jaseri, who is ugly and always spitting his lust.

"Take me away far from here, ‘Kakang’ Sopoyono, otherwise I would rather die!" This unexpected occurence was surprising all the guests present in the weeding, especially both the parents of the bride. Dalang Soponyono himself was also surprised and shocked, immediately Dalang Sopoyono cast his magical power to extinguish all the lights in the Duchy of Carangsoko. The darkness made the guests panic, providing an opportunity for Ki Dalang Soponyono to escape into the darkness with Dewi Ruyung Wulan, followed by his two younger siblings.

The Duke of Carangsoko Puspo Handung Joyo was very angry, and he called Patih Singopadu to overcome this situation immediately. "Hurry command the soldiers to turn on the lamps!" he said, and the soldiers rushed quickly to light the lamp. After the lights were back on, Raden Jaseri could not control his emotion and roll on the floor, due to his fiancee disappearance with Dalang Soponyono. Duke of Paranggarudo ordered Patih Singopadu to immediately prepare soldiers, to chase after Sopoyono and Dewi Ruyung Wulan.

Soldiers spreaded throughout the village, entering people’s houses with impolite and rude manner. The people of the Duchy of Carangsoko became frightened, they ran in disarray to save themselves. Soldiers searched all the houses of the inhabitants, in case they hid in one of the homes of the people, and certainly, those who dared to protect them would be severely punished. This situation has made Duke Puspo Handung Joyo unhappy because what he wanted to find was Dalang Soponyono, not to damage his people's houses. While, Duke Paranggarudo did not care about the damage at all, the most important thing for him was for Soponyono to be caught, dead or alive, for insulting the honor of Duke Paranggarudo.

Meanwhile, Ki Soponyono and Dewi Ruyung Wulan, accompanied by Ki Suponyono’s younger sisters ran steadily toward the forest, they walked along the river channel. Ki Soponyono was fighting back against the pursuers, though in vain, the because of the unbalanced number of pursuers and the pursued. In and out the forrest, Dewi Ruyung Wulan slip out from her royal (wedding) apparel, and exchanged her clothes with the clothes of the local people that they met to disguise themselves as villagers and avoid the attention of other people.

They eventually arrived at Dukuh Bantengan or Bantengan Hamlet (Trangkil), in the Panewon Majasemi area. The scorching heat of the day made the four-people thirsty.

However, a long dry season has made the nearby spring dried, therefore, made the water rare to find. They kept on walking to find water. Until, ultimately, they had to stop and sit sit under a large, dry tree; Running without stopping was a torment, especially for the three princesses, and particularly Dewi Ruyung Wulan, who had never work hard and walk for so long in her life. The thirst for the three daughters had been unbearable, hence, to continue the journey was no longer possible. Because previously, out of their thirst, they chase after a land that they tought had water flowing. However, after the tiring chase, it was then found out that it was only a mirage. They almost desperate until they arrive to a desolated paddy field where there was no well with the surrounding river was dry because of the drought. Seeing the paddy field, Ki Sapanyono became veryundecided whether to ask for water to the local inhabitants, due to his fear of meeting their pursuers or just steal for food. Out of his fear, He then decided to just steal watermelon or cucumber from the rice field for them to survive.

What they did not realize is that all their moves were watched carefully from a distance by the owner of the rice field, that is the brother of Panewu Sukmoyono, namely Raden Kembangjoyo. Previously, it was reported to him by the inhabitants that the rice fields were often destroyed by animals such as buffalo and mouse deer. Kembangjoyo was shocked since what he found causing the damage on the plants was not animals, but humans.

Kembangjoyo then ordered his subordinates to besiege the field.

It turns out that the one damaging our crop is you! You, THIEF! Capture them!

Immediately, there was a battle between Ki Soponyono with the subordinates of Kembang Joyo, but they were all defeated by Soponyono. Finally, Kembang Joyo intercepted the fight in the middle of rice fields. While from a distance, the three princesses hide, watching the fight, because they thought that the troop to be the troops of Paranggarudo.

Kembang Joyo was more powerful than Ki Soponyono,

And he had the legs of Ki Soponyono ambushed, then tied his hands with a dadung rope.

"I only stole because there was no other way, Ndoro" said Sopoyono.

"All thief said that there was no other way" answered Kembang Joyo.

Immediately, Dewi Ruyung Wulan came out of her hiding, along with the two younger sisters of Dalang Soponyono.

"Release Soponyono, the one you are after is me, right? You could bring me back as long as Kakang Soponyono is released!" Dewi Ruyung Wulan thought that the one who seized Dalang Soponyono was a Paranggarudo soldier.

Kembang Joyo, became more surprised that the thief he captured are with three beautiful girls. However, since Kembang Joyo was only assigned to protect the fields owned by his brother, he kept the four as his captive. The four people became prisoners of Raden Kembang Joyo, then they were confronted by Penewu Sukmoyono for explanation. Ki Soponyono then introduced one by one his travel companion. Afterwards, he told Penewu Sukmayono everything: all the incidents, why they were chased after by troops Parang Garudo and, eventually, they were forced to steal watermelon and cucumber which belong to Raden Kembang Joyo, because they could no longer hold the thirst and hunger. Hearing the words of Ki Soponyono, Sukmayono Penewu felt pity and did not want to punish them.

Penewu Sukmayono was even willing to accommodate and protect them. "Stay here all you want, let us be the one who deal with Paranggarudo problem." Sukmoyono let Dalang Soponyono, and the three daughters to rest first. As an infinite gratitude for all the goodness of Sukmoyono, Ki Saponyono presented his two sisters to the Penewu to serve as his servant. The offerings were gladly received. Ambarsari finally was being merried by Penewu Sukmoyono as his concubine, while Ambarwati given to R. Kembang Joyo to be his wife. While, Dewi Ruyung Wulan was planned to be returned to her father Adipati Carang Soko, Puspo Handung Joyo.

Yuyu Rumpung, the authority from Kemaguhan who was also a subordinate of Paranggarudo aware that Keris Pinutung (Javaness traditional weapon) and Kuluk Kanigoro (crown) is a great heirloom owned by Panewu Sukmoyono. In anticipation, Yuyu Rumpung orders his men, named Sondong Majeruk to steal the two heirlooms. However, before it was handed over to Yuyu Rumpung, Sondong Makerti had discovered about Sondong Majeruk’s plan therefore, they end up in a battle. Sondong Majeruk died from exhaustion from the battle, but before he died, he managed to puncture the stomach of Sondong Makerti with Keris Rambut Pinutung to death. At the end, the Keris Hair Pinutung could not be brought to Yuyu Rumpung by Sondong Majeruk.

Yuyu Rumpung then became wrathful that he ordered his troops to immediately attack Majasemi, joining Yudhopati’s troops under the lead of Patih Singopati. Meanwhile, the ParangGarudo’s troops were still pursuing and previously were searching the fugitives in people's houses, has also arrived at Majasemi. Duke Yudhopati was furious when he received the report that the fugitives: Dalang Soponyono, Dewi Ruyung Wulan with Soponyono's younger sisters were in Majasemi, and they were protected by Penewu Sukmayono.

A Fierce battle then took place, where many victims fell, including Ki Penewu Sukmoyono died in the battle. Upon knowing that his brother had fallen, Raden Kembangjoyo went berserk by holding Keris Rambut Pinutung and Kuluk Kanigoro, destroyed the entire Paranggarudo troops including their duke, Yudhopati. Raden Kembang Joyo were also assisted by Carangsoko's troops who took side in protecting their princess from Yudhopati’s rage, unfortunately, Patih Singopadu did not survive the battle. A fierce battle between Patih Singopati and Patih Singopadu decimated the life of both warriors. The battle in Majasemi ended with so many victims.

Ki Soponyono then brought Dewi Ruyung Wulan together with Raden Kembangjoyo to Adipati Puspo Handung Joyo, the duke of Carangsoko. As a token of deep appreciation, Dewi Ruyung Wulan was given to Raden Kembang Joyo to be his wife, because Kembang Joyo has managed to defeat Yudhopati, the Adipati Paranggarudo. Raden Kembang Joyo then settled in Carangsoko, replaced Puspo Handung Joyo as the leader of the Duchy of Carangsoko. He was also appointed as a Duke after merging the three duchies of Paranggarudo, Carangsoko and Majasemi into one kadipaten. The merger had finally created the harmony of the three warring duchies. In order to further solidify in leading the duchy, he invited Dalang Soponyono to expand his authority and sought the location for the center of government. Raden Kembangjaya and Raden Sopanyono then headed to Kemiri forest, and immediately cleared out the forest for the establishing the new Kadipaten/central government.

Alas (forest) Kemiri was not only inhabited by ferocious animals, such as Tiger, Elephant and other wild animals, but also by a kingdom of demons. Kembang Joyo and Dalang Soponyono work together to repel the Demon kingdom. Eventually, with the magic of Raden Kembang Joyo, the leader of the Demon surrendered. Dalang Sopoyono was also took part by playing wayang to warded off the Demon in the forest of Kemiri. The leader of the demon and his demon follower then ran away from the forest of Kemiri.

The next day, Kembang Joyo and Dalang Soponyono along with the Carangsoko’s troops continued their work to open the Kemiri Forest into a village. In the middle of the work, a man came, carrying a barrel of water.

"Stop, you. What's your name and what are you carrying on?" "I'm Ki Sagola, the barrel that I'm carrying contains Dawet (drink), I'm used to selling through here."

"What kind of drink, the Dawet is? Please make it for my soldiers and I!” "Why are these forests cleared? It is pity in fact of the animals ran to the mountains, is not it?" "We are opening this forest for new settlements, so that later it become a prosperous King’s city that ‘gemah ripah loh jinawi’ (wealthy/abundant natural wealth), since the former place could not be inhabited anymore due to the civil war" Raden Kembang Joyo was impressed by Dawet's taste which was a sweet and refreshing drink, therefore, he asked Ki Sagola about the drink he had just drunk. Ki Sagola told Kembang Joyo that this drink was made from sugar palm starch that were added coconut milk, palm sugar and coconut. Hearing that answer, Raden Kembang Joyo felt inspired, that later when the forest has been completly cleared, he will name the place by Kadipaten PatiPesantenan. In its development, Kadipaten Pati-Pesantenan became prosperous “gemah ripah loh jinawi” under the leadership of Kembang Joyo.
