The natural resources and the wealth of Banyumas Regency is quite potential because there are Slamet mountains with its highest peak at an anltitude around 3,400 m asl and still active. Banyumas Regency lies between the slopes of the mountains, away from the coast/sea, therefore, the effect of the sea breeze is not noticeable. However, with the lowland that is parallel with the southern coast, the wind appears to intersect in between the mountains and the valleys with an average pressure around 1,001 mbs (low pressure) and the air temperature ranges between 21.4° - 30.9° celcius.
Banyumas Regency was established at 12th of Robiul Awal 990 Hijriyah or coinciding with April 6, 1582. Subsequently, stipulated by the District Regulation (Perda) of Banyumas Regency Level II, Number 2 Year 1990. The founder of Banyumas Regency is Raden Joko Kahiman, who later became the first Regent, known by the title of ‘Adipati’ or Duke of Marapat (Adipati Mrapat).
Brief history begins from the reign of the Sultanate of Pajang, under the leadership of Sultan Hadiwijaya. At that time, occurred an event that caused the death of Adipati Wirasaba VI (the first of Main Residents) due to a misunderstanding of Kanjeng Sultan. Therefore, there was the murder in Bener Village, Lowano Sub-district, Purworejo Regency (now), when Adipati Wirasaba VI was actually on his way home from Pisowanan to Pajang. To amend his mistake, Sultan Pajang called the all of sons of Adipati Wirasaba VI and no one was brave enough to face the Sultan, except one of Adipati Wirasaba’s son-in- law; in his mind though he thought that if the Sultan was angry, he alone will get the wrath and that would be alright because it will be faced only by himself, and if the Sultan was going to give him the grace/mercy, the other sons would not be jealous. It turns out that he was given a grace from the Sultan by inaugurating him to become the 7 th Adipati Wirasaba. Since then, the son-in- law of Raden Joko Kahiman became the successor of his father-in- law with the title of Adipati Wirasaba VII.
Then, upon his return from the Pajang Sultanate, because of the greatness of his heart, and with the permission of Kanjeng Sultan, the new Adipati Wirasaba divided his territory into four region which were then given to his brothers-in- law, as follows:
- Banjar Terambakan territory is given to Kyai Ngabei Wirayuda
- Merden territory is given to Kyai Ngabei Wirakusuma
- Wirasaba territory is given to Kyai Ngabei Wargawijaya
- Kejawar area was controlled Adipati Wirasaba VII himself, by opening the Mangli forest to build a new central of government, which was later became the Banyumas Regency. It was because of his wisdom to divide the ‘Kadipaten’ or the duchy area into four territory for his brothers-in- law, that he (Adipati Wirasaba VII) is also called Adipati Marapat.
Knowing Raden Joko Kahiman: A long line of Noble with a very nobel nature.
Raden Joko Kahiman (Adipati Wirasaba VI) is the son of Raden Banyak Sosro with the mother comes from Pasir Luhur. Raden Banyak Sosro is the son of Raden Baribin, a prince of Majapahit whom because of a mistake, he fled and left to Pajajaran, and finally married with Dyah Ayu, the Queen of Pamekas, the daughter of King Pajajaran.
Furthermore, Nyi Banyak Sosro, mother of Raden Joko Kahiman is the daughter of Adipati Banyak Galeh (Mangkubumi II) from Pasir Luhur. Adipati Banyak Galeh is the ninth ancestry of Raden Arya Bangah from Galuh Pakuan Putra Pajajaran. However, since childhood, Raden Joko Kahiman was taken care of by Kyai Mranggi Semu, also known as Kyai Sembarta with Nyi Ngaisah that is the youngest daughter of Raden Baribin. They raise Raden Joko Kahiman in Kejawar.
From history, it is revealed that Raden Joko Kahiman is a noble knight to be exemplified by all citizens of Banyumas Regency, especially because he reflects:
- The nature of altruistic, that is not selfish, more concerned towards the well-being of others.
- A formidable and responsive development fighter
- Generating the unity of Majapahit, Galuh Pakuan and Pajajaran to becomes one region and providing welfare to all his brothers (and followers).
Thus, inspired the MOTTO or slogan and ETOS KERJA or the ‘WORK ETHIC’ of Banyumas Regency, which is ‘SATRIA’ or knight. Candra or surya sengkala (number of years symbolized by words, pictures or objects) for the anniversary of Banyumas Regency is "BEKTINING MANGGALA TUMATANING PRAJA" meaning the year 1582: “Bektining” comes from the word origin of “bekti” means worship, “Manggala” means leader, “Tumataning” is the word of origin of administration, “Praja” means bumi or earth and also budhi or ‘intellect’.
In summary, the interpretation of the phrase is “KEBAKTIAN DALAM UJUD KERJA SESEORANG PIMPINAN/MANGGALA MENGHASILKAN AKAN TERTATANYA ATAU TERBANGUNNYA SUATU PEMERINTAHAN” or ‘THE LOYALTY TO GOD IN THE WORK OF A LEADER WOULD PRODUCE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ORGANIZED THE GOVERNMENT’.
According to the Law Number 13 Year 1950 on the Regulation of the Regency Government within the Province of Central Java, referred to in Law Number 22 Year 1948 on Local Government, the areas that belong to the province of Central Java are 28 districts, including Banyumas Regency (the 14th district); the law was established in Yogyakarta on August 18, 1950, signed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia temporary office holders, Mr. As Saat, with Home Affairs Minister: Susanto Tirtoprojo, which was subsequently enacted on August 8, 1950 by the Minister of Justice A.G. Curug Cipendok has its own charm, because the environment is still natural. Since there are not many travelers who come to enjoy its beauty of nature, the nuance in Curug Cipendok is still quiet, with not much noise. The air around it feels cool and there is a plantation area along the road to the waterfall. There are also a camping ground and a lake called Telaga Pucung around the area.
The natural beauty of Curug Cipendok was developed by the Banyumas Regency Government in 1984 and its official opening as a new tourist attraction was held on February 27, 1987, equipped with basic public facilities, such as places for resting and praying. Efforts to improve services are still continuing. Various steps taken also by the government in an effort to promote through Banyumas tourism map, followed with the provision of facilities to improve the comfort of visitors. As seen from the (construction of) children's playground, entertainment performances, road improvements, and the addition of another tourist attraction, namely ‘Telaga’ or Lake Pucung located about 500 meters west of the location Curug.
The supporting attraction of this tourism site is the lake below the waterfall, telaga pucung, with its clean and clear water, surrounded by an unspoiled forests. Along the road, there are many stalls, built in front of local resident’s houses, that are peddling Mendoan Tempeh and pure milk.
Tomato, chilli and celery plantations are also an enjoyable view on the way to the waterfall. Not mentioning small rivers with fresh clear flowing water that invite visitors to plunge their feet in to feel the cool and crisp of the mountain water for a moment. This site is busiest with visits during the yearly big events, such as Lebaran ‘Idul Fitri’ holiday.

For travelers who wish to charter or rent Koperades, they can look for these cars at the T-junction of Losari (KarangLo Village).
The distance between Curug Cipendok and car park is about 500 m. However, the 500 m journey from the entrance to the waterfall will not be boring since the surrounding area is a natural beauty.
On that hilly walk, tourists will be greeted by the sounds of typical insects of tropical forests.
Then, after the 15-20 minutes of walk approaching to the Curug Cipendok, visitors will hear a roar like sound that resembles a heavy rain. That's the sound of the waterfalls that descend from a height of nearly 100 meters. Cold air mixed with water droplets create a fresh and peaceful atmosphere. If it were daylight, the shining sunlight makes a thin rainbow from the reflection of drops of water. In addition to its well preserved natural beauty, there are also java eagles and – some say – java tiger around Curug Cipendok, even though, for now, their very existence is diminishing.
